God works in mysterious ways... and in A Cock-Eyed Comedy Goytisolo takes on the Spanish Catholic church in a book which is both a comedy and a sharp attack on authority and conformity. Father de Trennes is a member of the staunchly conservative right wing Catholic organisation Opus Dei. Although in his case his search is for sex rather than God. A cast of historical characters, including philosopher Roland Barthes, Jean Genet and Argentine writer Manuel Puig, meet and mingle with a host of imaginary ones in an orgiastic romp until AIDS takes its toll on them all. Joe Orton meets Father Ted in this knockabout comedy which is also a vicious satire on the darker side of the history of the church: a church with many skeletons in its closet.
