I was in the mood for some Christian fantasy and this sufficed well. I enjoyed it quite well, though I think I would have enjoyed it a bit more if it was more YA. There is certainly nothing wrong with this novel (or the trilogy), I simply prefer the pacing and vibrancy of the YA genre. That being said, the characters are well constructed, the world is intriguing and it pulls you in and keeps the story going even without being YA.

Stylistically, I’d like for this to have been a bit more YA—a bit more dynamic, a somewhat faster plot and a bit more visceral emotionally. There’s a lot of thinking and not enough doing it talking through the first two acts. Also the whole story is kind of distant with a good deal of summary description rather than diving into scenes.

But the world and the characters are interesting. The intrigue is good enough that I’d like to have more of it. And the third act is exciting and satisfying and it feels like the story really gets going in a fun way.

Which leads into the sequel quite nicely I suppose...
