Oh, Lisa Lutz. You kill me every time. The Spellman books are by far one of my favourite series of books that I've ever read and I've been putting off reading The Last Word for so long mostly because of the title, and the fact it seems to infer this is the last Spellman book (although the last chapter gave me just the teensiest bit of hope that it isn't - we'll see).
It was so much fun to be back with the Spellman family. Why these books haven't been made into a half hour TV series is baffling to me because there is SO MUCH MATERIAL there. The Last Word was jam-packed full of all sorts of craziness and I lapped it up, like I have for all the other books. Isabel's life is insane this time around, especially after taking over Spellman Investigations (in a hostile manner, may I add). There was just so much to keep up with, my head was spinning at times but I love the frantic manner and it kept me reading, meaning I devoured the book in pretty much one sitting.
My only issue with the book was Henry Stone. We waited for ages for Henry and Isabel to get together, they broke up in the last book and in this book he's already moved on and got his girlfriend pregnant. That broke my heart completely, because Henry and Isabel seemed to make each other happy, and I loved their relationship. I honestly thought they were the end pairing. I really thought they'd make it.
The book made me laugh and cry, and I really do hope this wasn't the last book in the series - although if it is, it ended really well. Kudos to Lutz for that. This was no half-baked ending, this was done right if it was the end and if it wasn't, all the better. This is a must-read series if you love funny books and dysfunctional, awesome families. It's one of those book series that just gets better, and better, and better.
