After her husband is killed in a car accident that has left her severely disabled, Shelley returns to her parents' farm in the Scottish Highlands with her small son Dannie. For Greg and Sheina MacLeod it is a mixed blessing: Shelley is desperately unhappy and struggling to come to terms with the fact that she is unlikely to walk again; six-year-old Dannie, meanwhile, is confused, angry, and increasingly difficult to control. Then a stray Golden Retriever enters their lives, to be named Star.
