Take it from Charley Davidson, part-time P.I. and full-time Grim Reaper. The deceased find her very sparkly. Demons find her irresistible. And one entity in particular wants to seduce her in every way possible.

Second Grave on the Left once again uses humor to balance out the darker themes of the book. Charley continues to be snarky and sarcastic, while the rest of the cast has their own quirks and fun personalities. Of course, Charley also has to learn more about her powers as a grim reaper. Trying to track down Reyes' body while fighting off demons caused her to unleash some unusual abilities that she didn't even know she had! I was a bit mad at her for something she does at the end. I know she felt like she needed to do it, but it's really messed up. But it also made me need the next book immediately!
As for the mysteries, Second Grave on the Left certainly kept me on the edge of my seat. The dead man in Cookie's trunk was more like a side plot, but it was still interesting. The main mystery was Mimi's disappearance along with the deaths of several of her classmates from high school. Someone was obviously trying to keep a big secret from coming out. And it was big! I was shocked! In fact, that whole high school secret would have made its own engaging read. I love dark secrets!
I really enjoyed Second Grave on the Left. It certainly doesn't suffer from Second Book Syndrome and it left me wanting more! I'm especially intrigued by Reyes. We learn a lot more about him this time around, and he's turning out to be a lot more complicated.

Charley Davidson is a private investigator and grim reaper. She can speak to the departed, which makes solving their deaths so much easier. Charley sometimes works with Uncle Bob, a detective with the Albuquerque Police Department to solve crimes.
NOTE: There might be small spoilers here on the emerging relationship between Charley and Reyes since the last book. You’ve been warned.
Cookie’s friend goes missing and she needs Charley’s help to find her. Cookie tells her that Mimi contacted her to meet her at an out of the way cafe in the middle of the night. When they arrive, Mimi is nowhere in sight, but a message scrawled on the bathroom wall starts them on an investigation into several recent deaths from the same high school class. Someone is hiding a secret and is willing to kill to make sure it never comes to light. Everything starts to point toward a fellow student who is about to announce his plans to run for the Senate. Charley believes she is on the right track after thugs she affectionately renames Evil Riggs and Evil Murtaugh show up in her apartment to find out how much she knows.
Reyes is out of his coma and escaped from prison. The Feds are following Charley and so is Uncle Bob. They all think that Reyes will be contacting Charley. He is, but not in any way they’ll ever be able to find him. Reyes is supernatural and can become incorporeal. He will often visit Charley in her dreams or sometimes in her shower.
Charley is desperate to find him, not to send him back to prison, but to save him from the demons who are attacking his body. The demons are trying to locate Charley and Reyes decides he will allow his physical body to die so he is no longer a danger to Charley. As a supernatural being, it will take a lot for Reyes to die, but does Charley have enough time to find him and when she does, will she be able to get him away from the demons without becoming their prey?
THOUGHTS:
I love this series. The characters are fabulous and the premise of the series just leaves us wide open for an endless series. Charley is zany and unpredictable. Reyes is smoking hot. Fill that out with BFF Cookie, Uncle Bob, Garret, and those are only the living characters.
We also have a cast of deceased characters: Angel, the 13 year old gangbanger who died decades before and who is now Charley’s lead (only) investigator, and Rocket, the idiot/savant who died in the old insane asylum and who knows the name of everyone who dies on the planet and scratches their names in the walls down in the basement.
I can’t get enough of this series.

The more I listen to this series, the more I love it. I am waiting patiently (yeah right) for the library to get Third Grave Dead Ahead in on CD as well.

I actually also cooled in my feelings toward Reyes. I loved how mysterious and orgasmic he was in the first book of the series, but this book seemed to hinge on the "relationship" they developed in the first book. I put relationship in quotes because a) I didn't quite buy the fated lovers aspect and b) I don't know that Reyes popping in and out of Charley's life really constitutes a relationship.
I'm warming up to Garrett, though.
Charley is beginning to learn more about herself and her powers, and though I was interested in this, there wasn't much exploration of it until the very end of the book (I'm hoping for more in future books).
Despite my lukewarm feelings toward some of the aspects of the second installment, I have plans of continuing with the series. Just after a little break.
