It's the 1970's, and the young American fashion model Claire Breslinsky has fled to Europe to escape reminders of her brother's tragic death. In Munich, she finds not only work, but glamour. She rents a room in the apartment of a wealthy divorcee, and through her landlady, she meets an assortment of exotic Europeans, including a filmmaker, a psychiatrist to the stars, a famous photographer, and an easterner with a questionable income. When, at a dinner party, the filmmaker announces he would like to film a documentary in India, the other guests, all pleasantly wine-soaked, decide that they should go along. Travelling caravan-style, they embark on an amazing journey filled with the beauty and violence of the east and the squabbles and longings of a decadent troupe of artists.
