Forty-two students are left on an island to fight to the death in this intense dystopian thriller.

I woke up out of the blue a couple of weeks ago and thought “Man, I really need to read Battle Royale." As the day progressed, my obsession for reading it grew. By that evening I was ravenous to read it. Why? No clue, but there you have it. And guys, it was HARD to find a copy. It was printed in 1999, and no eBook version exists. I had to use snail mail to get the paperback delivered to me.

The first couple of chapters are utter chaos – the plot is flimsy, the world building vague, the character names too similar to distinguish between them. And yet, once the games begin, it’s satisfyingly intense. The greatest strength of this novel is the ability to create dynamic characters in a very short span of time. Told through third person omniscient, you see most of the characters perspectives first hand. The ability to make me care about any of them, let alone all of them, is impressive.

It’s visceral and gory – not for the feint of heart to say the least. It’s a smorgasbord of violence with tons of graphic descriptions of maiming and killing. However, I found the death scenes (and there are a LOT of death scenes) to be rather poetic. The characters were scared or in pain or plotting and then…nothing. Silence. Their part of the story was complete even if they (or you) did not want it to be. And, in some ways, isn’t that life for most of us?

tl;dr Gory violence paired with excellent characterizations made it a cinematic and satisfying read for me.

Battle Royale è ciò che meglio rappresenta la definizione di libro cult. Fonte di ispirazione per infinite opere di qualsiasi tipo – libri, film, videogiochi… – e unica opera di Koushun Takami (senza considerare il manga di Battle Royale), è un libro cruento e senza scrupoli che riesce a intrattenere per tutta la sua lunghezza.

600 pagine di tensione, combattimenti, descrizioni di cadaveri e tanta, tanta psicologia. Il racconto segue diversi personaggi, tra cui si distingue sin da subito un gruppo principale, uno secondario e poi diversi personaggi a sé stanti. Ad alcuni verrà dedicato più tempo di altri, ma ho apprezzato molto la netta differenziazione tra le loro storie. Questo aiuta a tenere fresco il romanzo e, cosa più importante, permette di vedere i pensieri e la psicologia dei diversi personaggi, ognuno differente. Non annoiare o appesantire un lettore per 600 pagine, che secondo me sono tante, non è compito facile, ma l’autore riesce benissimo nell’impresa grazie al sopracitato cambio di prospettiva, a uno stile di scrittura semplice ma non banale e a un ottimo equilibrio tra le varie parti del racconto: narrativa, combattimenti, descrizioni ambientali e caratteriali.

Trama

La trama, una novità al tempo ma ormai usatissima negli ultimi anni, è molto semplice ma ben sfruttata. Vengono fornite armi e viveri a 42 ragazzi delle medie e questi devono uccidersi tra di loro, lasciando un solo vincitore. Pur con una base così “banale”, l’autore riesce a intrattenere per oltre 600 pagine senza mai annoiare. Suspence, colpi di scena, cambi di prospettiva, tutto aiuta a rendere la lettura fluida e interessante. Non si può mai dedurre ciò che succederà nelle pagine seguenti.

Personaggi

Caratterizzare 42 personaggi (43 con colui che gestisce il “Programma”) non è un compito affatto facile, per questo motivo molti ragazzi vengono uccisi senza troppe pretese. Pur avendo relativamente pochi personaggi “importanti” (all’incirca 8, più qualche altro ragazzo secondario a cui vengono dedicati uno o due capitoli), per noi occidentali non è semplice ricordarci di loro per via dei loro nomi giapponesi. Ogni tanto, quando un personaggio viene citato, bisogna quindi fare mente locale per ripescare tutti i suoi frammenti descrittivi sparsi qua e là nel libro. In realtà non è un problema frequente, poiché tutti i personaggi sono piuttosto stereotipati: il duro che non parla mai, il ribelle, la ragazzina silenziosa e timida ma che dal nulla fa cose incredibili, il killer malato di mente e così via.
Altro punto negativo è che capiamo subito chi sono i protagonisti e per questo già sappiamo chi vincerà il Programma. Almeno così credevo, ma come già detto la trama nasconde ottime sorprese!

Copertina molto flessibile, comoda per leggere un libro di queste dimensioni, dal design che ho apprezzato molto. Spesso mi lamento della mancanza delle mappe, lo faccio sempre presente nelle recensioni, e questa volta davvero non capisco perché non è presente. Dannazione, c’è un’isola con delle zone identificate da numeri e lettere, a intervalli regolari alcune zone vengono proibite e non mettete una mappa? Questa è una mancanza per me gravissima, mi fa male al cuore. Vorrei togliere un punto al libro ma poi mi sentirei in colpa, alla fine è una mancanza dell’edizione più che della storia in sé. Una mappa, a mio parere, avrebbe giovato tantissimo al libro e alla comprensione delle vicende (ci si perde facilmente per via dei cambi del punto di vista e della vastità dell’area). Finito il libro ho acquistato il manga e… vi è una mappa al suo interno... vabbè

Avrei apprezzato anche una lista dei ragazzi, come nelle prime pagine, ma con i nomi di coloro che sono morti barrato alla fine di ogni capitolo. È una piccolezza, volendo si possono segnare da sé con una matita.

Battle Royale es una novela desgarradora, enigmática, impredecible, cruda y adictiva, que con un planteamiento bastante macabro, nos lleva a presenciar uno de las consecuencias de los más grandes horrores sociales, como pienso que es el totalitarismo. Una novela para sufrir junto con los personajes, para pensar en como morirá el siguiente... y sorprendernos. Una novela para pensar en nuestros derechos y que vale la pena luchar por ellos.

This was a great book. I can't say that I really "enjoyed" it because of the subject matter but it was very engaging. The premise is disturbing - a class of middle grade (15 year old) students is brought to an island and told they must kill each other until only one student remains.

But keep in mind, this book was published first. This book is the original. Although there are many many similarities, [b:Battle Royale|57891|Battle Royale|Koushun Takami|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1331235272s/57891.jpg|2786327] is different in one very important way - it's characters. These characters are all known to each other since they are in the same class. This adds a new dimension to the conflict that is not present in The Hunger Games. Takami also goes into the backstory of his characters revealing much more about the motivations for their decisions and the basis for their personalities.

The only reason I did not rate this 5 stars is because I found this a little slow going. I think much of that is because of a combination of translation (it is very true that things get lost in translation) and cultural differences. I am not all that familiar with Japanese culture beyond what is on tv. In particular the dialogue was frustrating. I'm pretty sure this is a cultural difference because of the formality of the Japanese culture in contrast to our very laid-back American culture. The way most of them spoke to each other seemed somewhat alien to me. This really is not the fault of the author. Rather, it is, I think, a result of my unfamiliarity with the culture.

All in all, this was a fantastic book and I would recommend it as long as you do not have a weak stomach. This is an extremely violent and gory book.
