Zenovia has taken care of her schizophrenic mother, Audrey, for as long as she can remember. One morning, their lives are changed when two members of a church called the Brethren of the Sacrifice knock on their door sharing a version of the gospel that Zenovia finds odd. Despite her hesitance, she becomes a member of the church along with her mother. Zenovia soon realizes, however, that the Brethren beliefs aren't all that Audrey has made them out to be. It also doesn't help that Audrey's new husband has convinced her to stop taking her medication, deeming her illness a demonic possession.

Unable to watch her mother's mental health deteriorate, Zenovia loses faith in the church and moves on to college in pursuit of her own dreams. Now married and living happily, Zenovia receives a call that her mother has committed suicide, and she must return to her hometown to face the demons she had once left behind
