The King in Yellow is named after a fictional play by the same title that drives completely insane anybody who reads it past the first act. The play becomes a recurrent theme through some of the stories.
HBO's True Detective is a gritty, neo-noir, very successful TV show that, in its first season, makes numerous references to the King in Yellow. In the TV show, as in the book, the King in Yellow remains unseen, a never revealed presence that lurks beyond the margins.
The King in Yellow the play takes palace in Carcosa, an imaginary cursed city referenced for the first time in the short story "An Inhabitant of Carcosa" written two years before The King in Yellow by Ambrose Bierce, another influential American short story writer contemporary of Chambers.
This eBook production includes also "An Inhabitant of Carcosa."
