US Marshal Jubal Judd receives a request for help from Judge Geddings. The judge has seen a man called Rufus Wilton whom, fourteen years previously, Geddings sentenced to hang for murder. But before the sentence could be carried out, Wilton escaped, and he has now assumed the guise of a respected citizen. But by the time Judd reaches Ashby he is too late. The judge has been shot and killed. And he left no clue as to who Wilton is posing as. It is up to Judd to find and stop Wilton before he kills again. But he soon realises he must face one of the most dangerous men around. Jubal will need more than luck if he is to get his man!
