Detective Inspector Ewen Gilbride and his wife Frances, both keen balletomanes, are looking forward to an evening at the Darielle theatre where Sarne Saxilby is to dance Giselle. The first short ballet is over and people drift off to the bar leaving Ewen and Frances in pleasant anticipation of the treat to come. But then Lucian Darielle, pale and shaking, bursts into their box: "My dear Gilbride! Thank God you're here! It's Sarne! She's dead in her dressing room! There's a knife in her back!"
