Taylor Mase is a wildlife lover. When he hears that a pair of rare red kites have come to nest nearby he is thrilled. But Taylor's father is a gamekeeper with orders to destroy the nesting kites. Once Taylor realises the kites are doomed he steals the eggs for his secret collection. He blows two eggs and puts the third to hatch under a broody hen. To his amazement the egg hatches - and Taylor has in his care one of the rarest birds in Britain. As he and his friend Alan rear the bird they fall in love with her and dream that one day she will breed in the woods around their homes. But the young kite has many enemies, from the young vixen who lives nearby, to the landowner and his gamekeepers. Taylor finds himself in a desperate struggle to save the life of the bird he has inadvertently saved from death.
