Left for dead in the fields of rural Oregon, a young woman defies all odds and survives-but she awakens with no idea who she is, or what happened to her. Burying Water is another book out of my normal reading comfort zone, but since I really loved Ten Tiny Breaths by Tucker I wanted to give this a try.
Burying Water centers around Water, a young woman who can’t remember her past after a horrible attack, and Jesse, the guy who knew and loved her. I did really like that it was mostly centered on Water’s progress and growth after whatever caused her to leave her memory, while the chapters with Jesse centered on her past and everything leading up to the point. It was a really neat way to have the story unfold & even though I think it’s fairly obvious who does what to her I did enjoy the overall story. Water’s desire to find a place for herself and the new relationships she forges is what made the story for me though. I loved her odd friendship with Ginny and the bond that they share. One of the few things that turn me into mush is when someone who is fiercely independent and jaded finally finds someone they feel they can trust and confide in. Jesse is a great guy, even with his troubled past following him around. His sincerity and openness really makes him a keeper, and I loved the two of them together.
The only problem I had with this one was the pacing. It moved so slowly at times and despite the continuous stream of words in my headphones I felt like I wasn’t making much progress. However I think this is probably the narrator’s fault and not the book itself. I had the speed on the fastest setting in the app and they were still speaking at an almost normal pace. It did seem a bit more relaxed than a normal “suspense” type book, so that might have played into it a bit as well.
Overall this was a pretty good start to a series, and I look forward to reading the second one when I get the chance.

This book is packed-full of emotion and it hits you in the head (or heart) like an anvil. The story is raw, not pretty, full of pain, but with a great ending. Alex and Jesse meet by chance, when he stops to help her with a flat tire in the middle of a storm. But alas, it seem like fate keeps pushing them together. Alex is married to Victor, who seems to have ties to the mob and is not a good person. In fact, he’s abusive towards Alex and it makes it very uncomfortable for anyone to be around them when together.
“He said the truth is like that water: it doesn't matter how hard you try to bury it; it'll always find some way back to the surface. It's resilient.”
The story is told from alternating points of view, from Jesse in the past and from Water (Alex) in the present. I kept wishing to both POVs to meet with each other so I could understand and read the ending faster! Jesse tells us the story from the beginning, while Water’s story starts when she wakes up in the hospital and cannot remember her past. Water’s sections are absolutely heartbreaking, she went through so much at such a young age, I cannot imagine having to endure so much pain and uncertainty.
“What if all those little bits that make up me get lost, overshadowed by one dark memory? My last memory, the one that made me want to forget everything else in the first place. Will I be able to escape the kind of damage that experience can cause?”
I really liked the host of characters that accompany Jesse and Water. Jesse’s parents are very supportive, and so is Jesse’s sister. Boone is his roommate and a good friend at the end. I really enjoyed Ginny, who kind of adopts Water and shares her very sad story in order to force her out of her comfort zone and make her choose to live, the opposite of what she did.
One of the things I liked the most was how Water and Jesse’s souls seem to remember each other, how distance and heartache and pain cannot separate them. It’s so romantic *sigh* Sadly – and this is just my moral radar talking – I really didn’t like the cheating parts. Especially since when it started Jesse and Water (Alex) didn’t even knew each other well. Also, Victor’s fate was a bit too convenient for my taste. The writing is sublime, lyrical, and full of raw emotions and insights. I can for certainty say that it will not be my last book by Tucker.
“The mind, it can be a deceitful thing. But it is no match for the heart."
Overall, Burying Water is a great start to the series and I can’t wait to see what happens next. It’s a very powerful read, full of cruelty, injustice, put the power of love, patience and resilience. I’m curious to read Boone’s story and to continue the series and maybe start the Ten Tiny Breaths series too.This review was originally posted on Reading With ABC

Our characters are flawed, sweet, and vulnerable. Jane Doe has lost her memory, and her only clues consist of the clothes she was wearing the night of the accident. Through her, we learn of her past, present, and experience her regaining her memories even as she creates new ones. I enjoyed getting to know Jane and her inner thoughts as she struggles to decide who she is. Jessie Welles is her new next-door neighbor, a sexy mechanic who is always willing to lend a helping hand. Jessie has made a few mistakes, and he is genuinely a good guy, who loves hard. Ginny is the ornery old woman who weaves quilts and befriends Jane. I adored this woman, and her backstory was fascinating. She made me laugh aloud and had me hugging myself tight as I thought about her past.
The romance threaded between the two timelines is a beautiful one, and yet tainted. I worried Tucker would not be able to make me see past some concerns and issues that I first experienced, but I was safe in her care. Both relationships felt genuine, and I loved how they entwined. This is mild on sexual content and high on sweet moments.

In her acknowledgements for Burying Water, K.A. Tucker writes, "Burying Water was an ambitious story. The shift between past and present, alternating POVs, and two people falling in love twice was a lot to take on." That quote right there from the acknowledgements sums up the book perfectly. There is so much going on in the novel, but it never feels like it's too much. It was absolutely ambitious for K.A. Tucker to tackle such a story as the one we read about Water and Jesse, but she manages it so effortlessly, that it left me quite amazed. Right from the beginning, you know you're starting a cracking novel. From the first Jesse point of view, where he's slipping and sliding along the roads, desperate to get to this mystery girl... to save her. Then it changes tack and we're with Jane Doe. Who doesn't know who she is, doesn't know why she's in hospital and can't remember anything about her life... The POVs then switch with each chapter, and we slowly build the story. We learn how Jane comes to be Water (a much better name for her, I confess), and we learn how Jessse is mixed up in it all, and it's quite action-packed.
I was literally on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading Burying Water. The two POVs were frustrating and awesome, because there were times when I just wanted to know what the eff was going on, I wanted to know what had happened, I was impatient, desperate for the truth to come out. But, on the other hand, it's so beautifully written, so beautifully unravelled that I didn't want to know what happened, because I finally got a clue and realised and I didn't want that knowledge to be told to Water. I was so conflicted! The new life Water carves for herself in Sisters is really, really great, considering all she's been through and her life with Ginny was so sweet, despite Ginny being a bit prickly. It was like two hurt souls had found each other, and helped each other to heal, from their own various issues. I loved that Water got flashes to her old life, that there were memories trying to bring their way to the forefront, and that Water felt so calm and collected with Jesse around, instinctively knowing he was a good guy.
And Jesse really is a good guy. He's amazing. His POV was probably my favourite, because that was where all the good stuff was coming from, where the reveals were happening, and where it was all leading up to Water in a field, left for dead. I loved both Jesse and Water. They were both super compelling characters, with such intricate and detailed back stories that are relayed to us slowly. Like you're being drip-fed, but you know the payoff will be worth it and the payoff was so worth it!!!!! I literally finished the book with the most amazed look on my face, I'm sure. It was the kinda book where you can't put it down, but you must put it down because it's THAT good a story you don't want it to end. It was so intricately woven, and the layers were delicious to unpeel, bit by bit. If Tucker's Ten Tiny Breaths series is just a little bit like Burying Water, I will be devouring it sharpish. There are not enough wonderful adjectives in the world for me to describe how much I loved Burying Water. In fact, I am so disappointed I've finished reading it, because I'm just not sure I was done with the characters yet. I miss them. This is an amazingly well written novel and I tip my hat to K.A. Alright. I’ll keep this review short and as spoiler-free as possible. So here’s the thing with Burying Water, we have a female heroine, Water, who miraculously survived after she was found barely breathing in rural Oregon. Then we have the love interest, Jesse Welles, who is trying so hard to stay away from our female MC. Sounds cliché, isn’t it? I would have immediately ignored this book based on that premise alone but the synopsis was intriguing enough to make me ask a lot of questions. What happened to Water? Why is Jesse staying away from her? Reading between the lines, I already have this hunch that it’s not because Jesse is the “Stay-away-from-me-because-I-am-carrying-a-lot-of-baggage” type of guy. So what the hell is the reason? This is the main question that certainly plagued me when I dove into Burying Water.
The first chapter instantly introduced me to a horrifying scene. And I immediately knew that Burying Water is going to be different from K.A. Tucker’s previous series, Ten Tiny Breaths. This book was darker and BOLDER. As the mystery surrounding Water’s attempted murder was gradually revealed, I could barely hold my breath because I couldn’t believe that Tucker would attempt such storyline. I’m pretty sure that there would be a lot of people who will be disturbed with the story of Burying Water. Many eyebrows will be raised. And annoyed (or angry at the worst) questions will surely be fired towards Tucker. Is being miserable enough reason to break one of the oldest and most valued rules of humankind? The storyline was definitely risky and I am still not sure whether to applaud or boo Tucker for it. All I know at this moment is that I am happy with Burying Water.
The Tucker trademarked-feels are still present and the steamy scenes had me curling my toes. Told from alternating POVs, with Water’s perspective as present and Jesse’s as the past, the characters of Burying Water were definitely fleshed out but I doubt if every reader will love them after what they’ve done. The messages that this book is trying to convey are definitely painful and would render you constantly asking for questions about right and wrong.
The story’s setting—Sister’s Oregon—was definitely lovely and the way Tucker describe it made me want to pack up and move there ASAP. Tucker fans will also find delight that like the Ten Tiny Breaths series, there’s a great focus on familial and friendship relationships here. Really, if you have been piously following Tucker’s books then you will have an idea that she writes awesome ships.
Burying Water was almost a perfect book with its dark and mysterious tone but there are some things that really bugged me. The ending was too perfect for my taste given the dire situation of our main characters. The manner that the conflict was resolved was way too convenient that I have a hard time believing it. Oh, K.A. Tucker, you can do better than that!
Overall, Burying Water, despite its convenient resolution, was a perfect way to start a new series. It tells a tale of forbidden romance without suffering the so called “New Adult curse.”
