* Joyce is considered to be one of the prominent authors of the modernist avant-garde of the early 20th century. The author wrote these stories when Ireland was going through some tough times. Irish nationalism was at its peak during that time, and people were struggling to form a national identity. Many characters from Dubliners appear in Joyce's masterpiece Ulysses. The initial stories in the collection are narrated by a child and gradually the narrators are older people as the stories continue in the book. This is done with a specific aim to present a tripartite division of the book. It is divided into three parts - childhood, adolescence, and maturity.
