In 1830, at the age of 14, Martin Nadaud was forced to walk hundreds of miles to Paris just to find work. He became a stonemason, a revolutionary and a Member of Parliament before fleeing to a long and lonely exile in London after the 1848 revolution. Later in his life, he would become a schoolmaster in Wimbledon before eventually returning to his native France. The author draws upon letters, papers and Nadaud's own memoires to construct an account of a fascinating man.
