Growing up on Manchester, England Paul Shipton considered a number of occupations. He dreamed about being a soccer player, an astronaut, or--if those possibilities didn't work out--a world-famous rock star. It shocked him when, after graduating from Cambridge University, he became a teacher, a textbook editor, and eventually a novelist.

His ideas for The Mighty Skink followed a disastrous trip through a safari park in England. In one enclosure, a jovial gang of rhesus monkeys leapt on top of the author's fist car and began shredding the vinyl roof. Returning to the park years later for research, he was sure he spotted some suspiciously familiar faces among those monkeys!

Paul Shipton moved to the United States in 1994. He and his wife and two daughters live in Madison, Wisconsin.
