Animals

by Carole Creary and Gay Wilson

Published 24 January 1996
This text offers a practical introduction to the common features of animals. The activities will give opportunities for children to identify living creatures, to look at the variety of animal skins and body parts and to understand that animals live in different environments. Animal sounds, life-cycles, camouflage, feeding and the need to care for animals are also covered. The activities have been designed to be as practical as possible and encourage children to use readily-available materials such as milk bottle tops, sequins, string and feathers. They will provide a firm foundation for the National Curriculum and Scottish 5-14 National Guidelines. The authors also wrote "Science from Stories", "Simply Space" and "Environmental Activities".

Materials

This book will encourage children to explore the properties of materials such as paper, metal, wood and plastic in a variety of practical activities. Children will have the opportunities to look for similarities and differences in materials, to consider their properties and how they can change, for example by stretching, twisting or melting. All the activities will draw on materials readily found in any nursery or reception class, such as play-dough, wood shavings, foil, buttons and fabric scraps. The child-centred activities will provide an excellent foundation for later learning in the National Curriculum and Scottish 5-14 National Guidelines. Carole Creary and Gay Wilson also wrote "Science from Stories", "Simply Space" and "Environmental Activities".
