Rainbow Readers is a reading programme, which works alongside main reading programmes to develop early reading skills and to help those children struggling to keep up. The 26 books each take a letter of the alphabet in turn as the starting point for a story. The books work slowly, taking a letter at a time and using reinforcement and repetition. The vocabulary concentrates on the 200 high frequency words. Each book uses a limited number of new words. The next book in the alphabet then uses these words and introduces some new words, so that the childrens' vocabulary grows incrementally at a measured pace. The series is therefore ideal for children to gradually develop their reading skills at their own pace. The books also include a range of support materials which relate directly to the National Literacy Framework and include the basic phonic strategies.

Rainbow Readers Teacher's Guide is designed to help teachers get the most out of the Rainbow Readers and the accompanying interactive software. The Teacher's Guide provides detailed information on each book, each interactive book and each interactive activity in the Rainbow Readers series, with suggestions for follow up and cross curricular activities. The Guide also provides the tools for the teacher to use the Rainbow Readers books and software as a structured phonics based reading scheme for the whole class, meeting SEN and inclusion requirements. It will aso save teachers hours of time in preparing lessons since it includes ready to use photocopiable worksheets for spelling, handwriting and phonics practice and lesson plans. The Guide is also available on CD-ROM in Adobe Acrobat format.
