Rainbow Readers is a reading series for first time readers and children who are struggling to learn to read. The 26 alphabetically- based books ( A - Z ) each take a letter of the alphabet in turn as the starting point for a story. Stories are graded in vocabulary and complexity, with strong use of repetition in the text. Each book introduces a limited number of new words from the 200 high frequency words listed in the NLS. The next book in the alphabet then uses these words and introduces some new words, so that the childrens' vocabulary grows incrementally at a measured pace. The series is therefore ideal for children to gradually develop their reading skills at their own pace. The books also include a range of support materials which relate directly to the National Literacy Framework and include the basic phonic strategies.
