A Higher Loyalty by James B. Comey

A Higher Loyalty

by James B. Comey

Former FBI director James Comey shares his experiences from his two decades in government, exploring what good, ethical leadership looks like, and how it drives sound decisions. His journey provides an entry into the corridors of power and a lesson in what makes an effective leader. Mr. Comey served as director of the FBI from 2013 to 2017, appointed to the post by President Barack Obama. He previously served as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York and as the U.S. Deputy Attorney General in the administration of President George W. Bush. From prosecuting the Mafia and Martha Stewart to helping change the Bush administration's policies on torture and electronic surveillance, overseeing the Hillary Clinton e-mail investigation as well as ties between the Trump campaign and Russia, Comey has been involved in some of the most consequential cases and policies of recent history.

“This fire also offers an opportunity to rebalance power among the three branches of our government, closer to the model the founders intended. There is reason to believe this fire will leave the presidency weaker and Congress and the courts stronger, just as the forest fire of Watergate did. There is a lot of good in that.”

James Comey narrators this book, which to me made it so much better. You can tell how he really feels about certain things and it really helped me like this book.

Now I don't like some of the decisions that Comey made in the 2016 election. I get why he made those decisions now and I can respect him for trying to do what is right. I can also still not like those decisions fully, because of what they caused.

A greater loyalty really helped me understand more about government and how it is supposed to run. I'm still learning all the different sides of this and how it has changed over the years and continues to change now. So reading this book I think is very important especially in the current political climate.

One other thing I liked about this book is how we got to learn more about Comey and why he went into the justice career field. Hearing all of his stories and really getting to see how and why he feels the way he does about certain things was really interesting to me. I also liked learning about his family and how they dealt with him being in the justice career field and how it truly has affected all their lives.

I do think this is a good book to read if you want to know more about why certain decisions were made and how we can continue fighting for justice.
