A tribe of warrior women battle for their survival in a harsh environment. Rain, the daughter of their queen, Alina, struggles against her destiny to become queen, to fight and to kill. Followed by a strange prophesy, Rain finds her life will take a new path. The warriors have always maintained their power through violence, but Rain finds a new kind of strength comes from bonds of friendship and love. An immensely powerful and sparely written tale that will capture the imagination of all readers.
This is an interesting, very succinct book. And while I liked the characters and the world that was strongly evoked and the themes that were glanced over, there so little depth to it. Which, I get is the nature of the novella, but it kept me from really getting into it or saying I loved it. I can say I liked the themes, but I can't really say I liked the book.
Even so, I enjoyed reading about Rain and I liked the mythic nature of the story. There were times I wanted more of the story and times I was glad she alluded to things and glanced across them. It was a hard world but there were also things that were nearly beautiful.
