I keep really wanting to love this series, but it’s a struggle. I love the core concept, but there’s just something holding me back. I think it’s at least in part due to the pacing, but it’s more than that. Despite the circumstances our characters are in I don’t really find myself attached to each of them, even though I really should be caring more.
This issue really runs through its plot at a breakneck speed. There’s betrayal, more betrayal, and (spoiler warning) two major character deaths (not the main characters, I promise) before you even have time to react. It probably would have gone better had it been stretched out into two issues – the fight scene at the end was much too quick, especially considering the heavy losses it had. I feel like I barely had time to realize the fight was starting before it was over. I also don’t know how I feel about who won the fight, and part of me wants to call bs on it.
As per usual I do find myself oddly pleased with the art style. It’s plain and simple but despite that it’s really quite striking. I’ll never get over seeing how beautiful the dragons (they’re called something else in the series, but I’m completely blanking at the moment) are in this series, and this issue has more of them than most.
