I enjoyed the story when taken as a whole. I would have appreciated more explanation of the magic element and the Elder Gods, because those details are really fuzzy. TW for death, drug use, depression, and divorce. This book is in our juvenile section, but I really think it's better off in YA due to the content and some of the obstacles the main character faces. Recommend for middle grade readers who enjoyed Amari and the Night Brothers (Alston) or the Morrigan Crow series (Townsend).
