The Trials (Project Paper Doll, #3)

by Stacey Kade

After being on the run, Ariane Tucker finds herself back where she started-under Dr. Jacobs's cruel control. Now she must participate in the upcoming trials: a deadly competition pitting her against other alien hybrids, each representing a rival corporation.

But Ariane is no one's weapon, and she is prepared to die if it means taking down those involved in Project Paper Doll. They destroyed all that she holds dear, including Zane Bradshaw, the one person she trusted and cared for the most. The person she was forced to leave behind, bleeding and alone.

As her plan takes shape, Ariane will need now more than ever to depend on the other side of her heritage-the cold, calculating instincts born from her alien DNA. With Zane gone, she has nothing left to lose.

Heart-pounding action and thrilling twists will lead Ariane down a dangerous path, where shocking truths and the chance for revenge await.

The Trials was a fun and fast paced ending to this series! It’s a few weeks later and Ariane is preparing for the upcoming trials. Thinking that Zane is gone has left her with nothing to lose. She’s going to face whatever tests are thrown at her, while also taking down the entire establishment or die trying. Then she gets a surprise at the trial initiation meeting: Zane is alive, but different. Is he still her Zane, or is he another obstacle in getting her freedom?

The Trials has a very short time frame. It’s mostly just two days: the day before the trials begin and the day of the first (and only) mission. It’s a lot of running around, trying to find people, trying to evade other people, trying to not get shot, etc. It’s very high adrenaline, and there’s twists and turns along the way. There’s so much happening that I never had time to get bored!

However, there is one thing that majorly bummed me about The Trials. A super, duper interesting discovery was revealed, but then it’s never mentioned again until a couple of brief mentions in the final chapters. That is not cool! At first I was wondering if maybe this character was lying about it in order to get Ariane to cooperate, but then it turns out that they weren’t lying. Then nothing. It was beyond interesting and I wanted more! Like, this thing could have been it’s own book! Instead it gets just a few sentences that don’t even really say anything about it. Not fair!

The Trials is a great finale, but I was not happy to have some new information revealed and then not expanded on. It was quite frustration, because I was expecting something to come of that. It’s a huge bomb to just drop on someone! Aside from that though, nearly everything is wrapped up nicely and that epilogue was pretty adorable.
