Time of Wonder

Winner of theĀ Caldecott Medal! For fans of Blueberries for Sal, One Morning in Maine, and Make way for Ducklings.

"Out on the islands that poke their rocky shores above the waters of Penobscot Bay, you can watch the time of the world go by, from minute to minute, hour to hour, from day to day . . ." So begins this classic story of one summer on a Maine island from the author of One Morning in Maine and Blueberries for Sal. The spell of rain, the gulls and a foggy morning, the excitement of sailing, the quiet of the night, the sudden terror of a hurricane, and, in the end, the peace of the island as the family packs up to leave are shown in poetic language and vibrant, evocative pictures.

We read this one tonight for bedtime out of our Make Way for McCloskey Treasury but I enjoyed it enough to almost wish we has a solo copy. Both girls sat snuggled in my lap and were calm almost all the way through and sleepy by the end. Which is saying something when reading a picture book such as McCloskey heavy on the text and light on the images for my 3 & 1 year old girls.

This one is a Caldecott winner and it is easy to see why. It has a tempo all of its own with such as the rushing and changing of the tide. It makes me remember my beach vacations and the calmness and "wonder" that surrounded them.

I certainly wouldn't mind this as a reread and I hope over the years my girls will request it. (At least as much as "blueberries!)
