The perfect book for the Christmas season.
It is Midwinter's Eve, the night before Will's eleventh birthday. But there is an atmosphere of fear in the familiar countryside around him. Will is about to make a shocking discovery - that he is the last person to be born with the power of the Old Ones, and as a guardian of the Light he must begin a dangerous journey to vanquish the terrifyingly evil magic of the Dark.
The Dark Is Rising was entertaining, but I was a bit disappointed in it. My main issue is that everything just happens to the main character, Will Stanton. He doesn't get a chance to actively make any choices or take any actions independently. Everyone just throws all the solutions to him, including giving him a book to read that infuses his mind with all the answers to his questions. It would have been more satisfying for him to work a little bit to be the hero.
