A good introduction for young adult readers to the Holocaust. This is based on the real friendship of Zlatka and Fania, who met in Auschwitz. As Fania's birthday approaches, Zlatka barters for the materials to make her best friend a heart filled with loving messages from their group of friends in the camp. This heart, along with their friendship, survived the camp, four death marches, and a train ride back to Poland after liberation.
