The stakes are higher than they've ever been, things become so much more intense, and the characters are more developed and complex. The feel of the book and the world she's created feels incredibly different, but so much more alive and interesting. New dangers are introduced, with the Agency and more background knowledge on just how powerful it is and how threatening it can be. Suddenly there are rules that Anna and the boys need to follow and if they don't, the threat could be imminent to their lives, putting them in extreme danger. You can really get a feel for how terrifying and intense this world they're fighting to stay alive and survive in.
Fast paced, full of overwhelming fear and drama, Altered is the perfect example of what a sophomore book in a series should be. Jennifer Rush pulls out all of the stops with this brilliant young adult novel, a great addition to the series. From the moment you start reading, you'll be ensnared from beginning to end, and wrapped up in the intense ball of mystery she has created.
