This book is not what I expected. Even after the myriad reviews and recommendations that said it would not be what I expected— this book is not what I expected. I’m tempted to think there’s no real way to describe it, because anything in this genre comes with expectations you can’t avoid. Reisz ignores most of them, winks at a few, subverts the rest.

I crave this kind of complexity. She’s not afraid to be silly and funny and come from a place of real joy, and yet take on the big subjects. Grace. Pain. Redemption. Faith. I had to check my preconceptions at the door, and the books that make me do that are too few and far between.

She pushed at my boundaries. I’m so glad she did; I’m so glad she made me think; I’m so glad I didn’t make up my mind before I opened the book. Also, now, two months after the fact with half of this series under my belt, I’m looking back at my former self who couldn’t stand Søren and said Wes was her favorite. Oh, honey. I had a feeling Reisz was setting me up to flip that around, and that she has.
