Listening to gritty is very different to reading it.
***An Audio Review***
I’m going to keep this review fairly short. I know I’ve said that before, but this time, I mean it.
To start off, I have to say that Nashoda Rose is definitely becoming one of my favourite authors. Her style of writing, depth and character development really appeals to me. I haven’t read a book from this series in a while and I was worried that I would struggle to remember what was going on. That worry was put to rest pretty quickly. What I thought I’d struggle with, came back relatively quickly. The characters are hard to forget. The pain they’ve survived and the happiness they found or are working towards makes it easy to pick up and follow along.
Now, to be honest, I think I made a mistake. I should have read this story instead of listening to it. It’s hard to explain. The story is great and the audio is great but I think that some of the overwhelming feelings I normally get when reading myself, was missing. Sure, I still squirmed, giggled, gasped and shuddered but I think if I’d read it, it would have been even more of an experience.
I actually bought this in audio form because I’m a huge fan of Stella Bloom as a narrator. She does a great job again. Now, Kas Vadim, he does a great job too…but, I think I struggle with a guy doing a girls voice. I know that seems mean, sexist and judgemental, but a female dropping her voice to do the male comes through better (for me) than vice verse.
Now, story-wise…oh boy, oh boy, oh boy. You really have to toughen up for this one. I found listening to a scene with graphic violence, especially the one in this book, had me physically reacting. Yep, on the train…AGAIN. I swear my fellow passengers must think there is something wrong with me. My body jumped, my face scrunched up and I even said (out loud) Ewww. Just a wee bit embarrassing.
Shattered By You is not an easy story to enjoy. The pain, abuse and suffering that was experienced by Haven is not something you’d wish on your worst enemy. The fact that it happened when she was really young makes it even more horrific. Luckily, waiting on the other side is Crisis. He holds the glue and sticky tape to help her put herself back together. It’s a long process and all the gang from Tear Asunder, including Haven’s twin Ream, come together with their own version of masking tape to help as well. They won’t give up on her.
Shattered By You was a bloody great story and a fantastic audio book. I can’t wait for Kite to get his story so we can see how kinky he really is.
