Charley's First Night by Amy Hest

Charley's First Night

by Amy Hest

A book about friendship, new beginnings and that indescribable measure of love that we call a dog.

This story tells of the beginning of a close bond of friendship between Henry and his new pet dog, Charley. On Charley's first night, Henry carries his new puppy in his old baby blanket, all the way to his house. He shows Charley every room, saying, "This is home, Charley." Henry's parents make it very clear where Charley will be sleeping: in the kitchen. But when Charley starts crying in the middle of the night ... Henry simply can't leave his puppy down there by himself! With warmth, humour, and endearing simplicity, Amy Hest tells a tale familiar to everyone who has loved a puppy, while Helen Oxenbury renders each tender gesture and charming detail in a beauty of a book.

By the cover image I wasn't exactly sure what to expect, but I was thinking it was some sort of winter read. However it does take place during the snowy season this is a book about a boy named Henry and his new puppy Charley. The pages are gorgeous with each illustration bordered giving it a fancy storybook feel. The illustrations fabulous and fun to view. I'm not sure I've been familiar with Helen Oxenbury before, but I'm a fan now. Amy Hest had my heart after [b:Little Chick|6265268|Little Chick|Amy Hest|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1320539582s/6265268.jpg|6448521] and I'm glad to read her words again.

The story starts with carrying Charley home, and the story ends with the boys finally sleeping on his first night. It's a cute reader with beautiful images that will be beneficial for any child, whether they are getting a pet on their on or living through storybook characters. It's fun and a great anytime read, but wonderful for the cold water as well.
