The Witch and the Hunter come together.

***3.5 Stars***

I just finished a book that I thoroughly enjoyed. It kept my attention from start to finish, made me want to get back to it as soon as possible if real life intruded and I was desperate to know how it would end. To me, these are outstanding reasons why a book stands out from the pack. Reading Karma definitely ticked a lot of boxes in the positive column, but unfortunately at the end, I was left a little disappointed. Not a lot disappointed mind you, just a little.

See, first and foremost I’m a romance reader and this one was sorely lacking in romantic feels. We start Karma with an introduction to Amanda a witch with some very special powers. From the very beginning, you can tell that Amanda is snarky, a little rude and honest to a fault. I kind of liked her. Then we meet Alex and to be honest I don’t particularly like him. He works for the FBI in the Paranormal Analysis Unit as a Hunter. He’s a good looking, arrogant, macho man who takes his job of hunting down evil very seriously. Alex is very close to his brother Jesse who works alongside him. Amanda and Alex had a relationship that ended abruptly when he found out that she had been keeping her abilities a secret from him. With their relationship ending badly (don’t blame her considering he’d held a gun to her head) it’s no surprise that Amanda is not stoked when Alex pops back into her life needing her help to find Jesse.

For most of the book, Alex is a jerk. Amanda isn’t much better, but I found my tolerance a lot higher considering how things ended between them. Besides, Alex needs her help, not the other way around. The sexual tension between them jumps off the pages, but never really gets dealt with or explained. The short answers never really left me satisfied with how and why they broke up. I didn’t like that up till the very last page there were still questions unanswered. I hated that Amanda was able to jump on a bus and leave. Are they the couple the stories in this series are going to be about? Was this just to show us what Amanda is leaving behind when she starts her new life in New York? Is it going to be about Alex and Jesse? Are we going to be seeing Alex and Jesse staying with the FBI and moving on with their lives? The story didn't feel like it ended.

I just needed more.

The storyline for Karma was interesting. We get to learn about what Amanda can do with her witchcraft and special abilities. Karma does touch on some sensitive subjects. Child abuse We don’t actually have to see the deeds done, but it is clear what is happening and has happened previously to them. There are descriptions of some of the violence that happens, but I never felt uncomfortable reading it. Alex and Amanda kiss once or twice but it wasn’t overly sexual. Alex attempts to hook up with someone else a couple of times. I’m not sure if Alex does this on purpose to upset Amanda, but he takes pleasure in pointing out that she comes across as jealous.

In the end, I really enjoyed the storyline with Amanda facing the baddies and using her witchy/voodoo magic to save the day. I wished the story of Amanda and Alex was fleshed out a little more and maybe a sneak peek into Alex’s thinking would have helped me understand his thoughts and motivations.

I don’t know what’s up next…or…who’s up next, but the author definitely has a knack for drawing me into this witchy world. I'm very interested to see what's coming up next for this new author (to me).
