For a book that comes together from a dream in 3 weeks time (see notes inside) - I found this amazing.
Before you pick this book up though I want to warn you that it consists of quite a lot of trigger content, which includes violence towards women - and men. Though arguably far more towards the women. This is a dystopian world setting - with all the grit that tends to come with that Trope.
So please take that into consideration before reading - and if this will trigger you, please reconsider.
I am partial to a dystopian world though - I love that kind of setting, so be warned - this book is slightly dark in places and also gave me a slight feeling of 'Snowpiercer'. Though in this case, we are on a cruise ship and not a train - but what reminded me a bit of that book was to what extent our dear Captian will go to - to save the human race.
As with most of Cain's books - I was dragged in early and the writing is engaging good descriptions and I felt like I was THERE. The main heroine of our story is a strooooong woman - and I absolutely loved her attitude. Ofc I sometimes wanted her to understand (like I felt I did) the reasons behind how the ship worked. The cogs of it all. Which she does, she's no idiot - but she's not embracing it at all - why? Because she's too..."good"? She wants to save everyone, but she also refuses to give up hope that there is still somewhere out there in the world that is still...good. That it all can't have fallen to pieces. It was sometimes hard reading all her feelings, Cain is amazing in bringing in all the feels in her books - and this one was no different.
The Captian was amazingly written. You won't like him much at first I bet - but under the exterior is a mastermind. Ruthless? Oh yes. But he made choices and gave it all - because he had a goal. And his goal is survival. And as we all know - in order to survive and actually thrive for generations - shit needs to happen, we have to make sacrifices and so on. I felt he was amazingly written.
I also loved the little tidbits of medical snippets our dear Heroine comes with. She wanted to go into paediatrics - but the war changed it all - she is still quite learned though, and it's funny how her sarcasm towards many of the men and women are based on logic and health care. hehe
She made me giggle.
This book also made me want to cry a bit as at times it is heartbreaking. And in good Addison Cain fashion - we do see some gore. But it wouldn't be an Addison Cain book without this. 3
All in all, I gave it 5 stars because I could not put it down. The writing flows easily and I never felt lost. The character development is really good and I ended up loving more than just the H/h but other persons in the book as well.
