To be honest, I completely forgot about the release of King’s Cage last year when I was in my epic reading slump. I really enjoyed the first two books in the series, so I kept meaning to get hold of King’s Cage ASAP but it just didn’t happen. BUT, I have finally read it, and I reeaaaally enjoyed it. I’m kind of glad that I waited so long to read it because THAT ENDING.


The plot of King’s Cage would normally make for quite a slow book. I’m sure some people found the whole thing to be very slow, because it’s such a long book and it starts with Mare being held captive by Maven, which goes on for quite a while. However, Aveyard introduced two new points of view, which I loved, and I thought this helped mix things up a lot so I was never bored of reading about Mare in the palace.

Introducing these points of view also helped expand the world this series is set in. I really enjoyed learning more about the various places the characters were visiting, and thanks to Mare’s captivity, we learnt a lot more about the court and the politics than we did in the previous book.

I really liked the look into Maven’s character. Aveyard developed him quite nicely, and we learnt why he acts the way he does, as well as more about his relationship with his family. After reading this, I don’t understand how people think he can be redeemed, or how they can ship Maven with Mare, because I think it’s made pretty clear that Maven is irredeemable. There’s no coming back from the things he has done. And HE LITERALLY CHAINED MARE UP, DRAINED HER POWER, AND KEPT HER PRISONER. Nope.

I don’t particularly ship Mare with Cal either but, guys, THAT ENDING. “You’re not alone. You have your crown.” *mic drop* This was the most beautiful moment, and I really hope that Aveyard follows through with what she set up here. If she backtracks I’m going to be so disappointed.

I’ve really excited for the series finale, War Storm, and I’m really struggling with waiting until May to read it. I can only imagine how fans who read King’s Cage last year are feeling! But still, only two months to go. I can’t wait!
