When You're Feeling Sick by Coy Bowles shares what is intended to be a humorous tale about getting sick and what to expect. Geared towards three to seven-year-olds, I think this will appeal to young boys. The book is hardcover with a few lines on each page and vivid illustrations. The illustrations were done by Andy Elkerton and are rich and vibrant. It featured silly monsters, green children, and brightly colored dragons.

The story itself is one that left me with mixed feelings. Aspects of it I liked which included what happened when you get sick, getting rest, taking your meds and listening to your doctor. The other elements meant to be silly struck me wrong, like spilling soup on your head, the sick song and other bits. As I said, I think a young boy would burst into giggles especially at the mention of poopy, and Broccoli sprout monkey-hair burgers with green ketchup. The writing for me was all over the place with parts that rhymed and others that felt randomly placed. Reading the tale allowed left me unsure of pacing.

For the right audience When You're Feeling Sick will probably deliver giggles and assure children they will feel better soon. As for me, this is not a book I will be adding to my grandchildren's' bookshelf.
