Demon Hunting with a Sexy Ex

by Lexi George

Southern-fried demons. Hell-raising rednecks. And one killer ex-boyfriend . . .

THIS WITCH IS ON FIRE

Cassandra Ferguson McKenna, aka the Witch of Devil River, has only one thing to say to her demon-hunting ex: We are never ever getting back together. Sure, Duncan Dalvhani may be the hottest thing this side of the Mason-Dixon line. He’s got a body to die for—which is hard to ignore when he skinny dips in her river every day—and swears he loves her. But as a demon hunter, Duncan is the sworn enemy of a demonoid sorceress like Cassandra. Give him another chance to break her heart? Witch, please. But when Cassandra is attacked by a werewolf, Duncan not only comes to her rescue, he helps her take on a band of magic-drunk moonshiners, fire-breathing demons, shifty shapeshifters, and a pet Sasquatch named Sugar. Welcome to Alabama. But when a portal opens up for even more hellaciousness, Cassandra has to admit that Duncan is slowly opening her heart—to a whole new world of unearthly delights . . .

Cute cover on this one. Good representation of the story. Godd use of graphics. Great composition and title work as well.

This is one of those times where one character completely ruins a book. Well, obviously not COMPLETELY ruins it as I still am giving it 3.5 Stars. That said, had the heroine not been such an unmitigated b!tch this one would probably have gotten 4.5, even 5 Stars. Alas, a b!tch she was, and I loathed her.

SO many times I wanted Duncan to tell her to grow the f@ck up and for him to move on. Poor guy had been looking for (and pining for) her for TWO HUNDRED YEARS. That is right folks; this chick has been holding onto a grudge for two centuries over something Duncan said, that yes was hurtful but not THAT hurtful. Plus he came back a few days after he said it to apologize and ask for forgiveness and she had done a runner. Now he has finally found her and is trying to win her back. Did I mention I hated her? She was a twat of epic proportions. Throwing the fact she slept with OM in his face which broke his heart. On a side note...I have NO clue if he sleeps with others during those two centuries. Sometimes the things he said led me to think he hadn't, but then when he was telling Evan about the THRALL and how the Dalvahni (what Duncan is) have sex to exchange power “The Great Directive does not prescribe a strict schedule, only that a Dalvahni warrior avail himself of a Thrall at regular intervals" leads me to believe that he must have. So basically it was clear as mud.

So now that we got my dislikes out of the way let me explain what I DID like. Basically everything apart from the heroine. I LOVED Duncan. I adored the side characters. The writing was fantastic. It was well paced. The plot (and subplots) were interesting and kept me turning the pages. I haven't read any of the other books in this series, and I didn't find myself lost or anything. I am sure if you had read them then you would probably be more familiar with some of the side characters and the "monsters, " but I think this one holds up fine as a standalone. I also found it quite humorous at times. So yea, all in all, this one was a fun read, and I will certainly be going back to read the previous books when time allows. A thumb and pinkie finger up from yours truly.
