Lucky to have survived the car-wreck that killed her family.
Lucky to get a single room because she wakes up screaming every night.
And finally, lucky to be chosen to join a foster family at their remote country manor.
But soon, Margot realises that it wasn’t generosity that moved Mr. and Mrs. Sutton to bring her home. Margo was handpicked to be a companion for their daughter, Agatha - a formerly typical teenager who suddenly went catatonic.
Staying with the Suttons is better than the alternatives, but strange things start happening at the estate. As Margot begins to understand the truth, she begins to slip away…just like Agatha.
The very first page really hooks you right off the bat. Seriously! It starts with an opening scene so full of suspense that my emotions went tumbling within the first 5 minutes of reading. Books like this really pique my interest and prompt me to dive right in!
The creepy factor definitely lingers throughout the entire book and the twists were steady and consistent. I really like how Margot and Agatha’s friendship progressed, and the subtle romance with Barrett was just enough to add another dynamic to the plot without taking away from the main story or it’s gothic vibes. I do wish we learned a smidgen more background of the Sutton family history, but overall….. this is a solid read!
I recommend it to anyone who enjoys an eery gothic story without the typical gore or intense violence often seen in the genre.
