From the first few pages, my attention was grabbed. You think it's going to possibly be something slow, or not super interesting at first. Lex is working in a retail store and hears a couple talking about what kind of diapers they need to get. But when she approaches them to help, she realizes they're kidnappers. How does she know this? Her niece is in the babycarrier on the floor by the couple, and she does not know them.
There's magic, vampires, mentions of werewolves (though no actual werewolves in this book), suspense, action, and a touch of romance.
I really liked Lex as a character, and I liked Lily and Quinn as well. Lex was three-dimensional, with good qualities as well as flaws. The magic was interesting as well, I hope we get more explanations as to how it works in other books. Though I agree with Lex, I did NOT like one of the things Simon did to teach her magic. You'll know it when you read it.
The romance thread was very faint for most of the book. You don't really know for sure that anything will happen at all until the end. And there was no sign of love triangles.
The book was fast-paced, but without being so fast that you get confused as to what is going on and why. There are a number of fun moments, and no slow spots. So if you like paranormal books with a good dash of action, I would recommend this book. I'll be getting the next in the series once it comes out.
