The Copper Promise (complete novel) by Jen Williams

The Copper Promise (complete novel) (Copper Cat Trilogy, #1)

by Jen Williams

There are some tall stories about the caverns beneath the Citadel - about magic and mages and monsters and gods.

Wydrin of Crosshaven has heard them all, but she's spent long enough trawling caverns and taverns with her companion Sir Sebastian to learn that there's no money to be made in chasing rumours.

But then a crippled nobleman with a dead man's name offers them a job: exploring the Citadel's darkest depths. It sounds like just another quest with gold and adventure ... if they're lucky, they might even have a tale of their own to tell once it's over.

These reckless adventurers will soon learn that sometimes there is truth in rumour. Sometimes a story can save your life.

I'm not sure why this just didn't work for me, I think it was just that it felt like the author could do better. I'm pretty sure I won't be reading any more set in this universe. I won't be avoiding this author but I'd like to see her write more first. (and if I ever actually publish I'm sure others will say the same of me)

It did read like novelised gaming sessions and has some of the problems of this, the characters do things for giggles rather than logic, the four novellas felt disjointed and I didn't feel that the romance built well.

Overall I felt a bit meh about it all.
