For those that haven’t heard: Brian Bendis (Alias, Jessica Jones, Spider-Man: Miles Morales) and Michael Gaydos (Alias, Jessica Jones, Young Avengers) have jumped over to the DC side of things. While it wasn’t explicitly stated, my assumption is that they were given permission to write something of their choosing (I keep seeing that happen with these author/artists snipings, so it holds up). I would also hazard that Pearl is that very series for them.
I’m not ashamed to say that while I’m really sad to see the duo leave Marvel, I have been really looking forward to seeing what they can do in the DC world. I suppose that’s the bright side of reading both publishing companies, huh?
I’ve been especially looking forward to Pearl. The art that has been getting shown off for this series has been amazing. Look at the cover for this issue and you’ll understand exactly what I mean.
The core concept of Pearl is a girl (Pearl, obviously) wrapped up with the modern day Yakuza. It doesn’t sound especially stand out, all things considered, but I’m fairly confident that once it gets going it’ll hold our attention.
The first issue in any series is always the hardest. They have to throw a lot of information at us while still grabbing and holding out attention. It isn’t an easy task. They succeeded in getting me curious about Pearl and her situation, though if I’m being brutally honest I’m not yet feeling any emotional attachment to any of the characters yet. I am enjoying the quirky and unexpected connection between Pearl’s current profession and the one that has so suddenly been sprung on her. It’s different.
I guess the jury is still out on this series, though I still am adamant that I’ll end up hooked at some point. That’s happened to me with every other series that this duo has been involved in.
