Monster Musume Vol. 1

by Okayado

Monsters - they're real, and they want to date us! Three years ago, the world learned that harpies, centaurs, catgirls, and all manners of fabulous creatures are not merely fiction; they are flesh and blood - not to mention scale, feather, horn, and fang. Thanks to the "Cultural Exchange Between Species Act," these once-mythical creatures have assimilated into society, or at least, they're trying. When a hapless human teenager named Kurusu Kimihito is inducted as a "volunteer" into the government exchange program, his world is turned upside down. A snake-like lamia named Miia comes to live with him, and it is Kurusu's job to take care of her and make sure she integrates into his everyday life. Unfortunately for Kurusu, Miia is undeniably sexy, and the law against interspecies breeding is very strict. Even worse, when a ravishing centaur girl and a flirtatious harpy move in, what's a full-blooded teenage human with raging hormones to do?

I don’t know what made me read this manga.

I had heard of this series for a long time, but dismissed it as another stupid basic harem anime. There’s a Monster Girl exchange program, all the girls try to smash, but the main character will go to jail if he smashes, which causes hilarity. I dunno. Something about that inspired me to check it out. There may be a way to execute that plot properly, but it does not seem to be the case with this series.

The whole thing is boring. It didn’t hold my attention. All the girls are so... predictable in their devotion to the main character. The moment they see him, they become obsessed with him for no apparent reason. This is a stupid fantasy that boys wish would come true, but seeing it come true is utterly ridiculous.

I thought the nudity wouldn’t bother me, but GOD DAMN is there a lot. Prior to reading this, I read several other reviews and didn’t believe any of them when they mentioned the nudity. I should have noted it. This isn’t normal nudity with a purpose, these irrational girls will literally strip naked whenever they want. It’s like every page. It was like, “Oh, man, another titty. Oh, man, another titty. Holy shit calm down-- One more!!! What the hell just happened?”

Does the author not know that it is best not to over-saturate anything, because otherwise you will desensitize the audience to it? The author made the whole thing seem so obnoxious. There is something about the author’s drawings of boobs and nipples that I really dislike. Those nipples look plastic, and those boobs look oddly shaped. Apart from that, the art was decent. There is literally nothing I like about this. Is there anyone who can shed some light on this? Is pretending to be the protagonist really that fun?

It is not a series I recommend. The characters are not convincing and their dialogue is uninspiring. The plot is predictable, and the ending is unsatisfying. In summary, it's a mediocre manga that you should stay away from.
