Creative imagining of a mad world: five stars

"I can't go back to yesterday, because I was a different person then" reads the tattoo on Alice Pleasant Wonder's arm, a nineteen year old girl in an asylum. She is told that she is there because she murdered all of her classmates, but she doesn't remember anything from before the accident. This book starts a wondertastic adventure outside, where she and Cater Pillar (Pilla da Killa) aim to save the world from the Wonderland Monsters and in the process uncover the secrets of her past.

Einstein once said, 'Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a persistent one.'

This book, and series, uses insanity and madness to delve into things that affect our every day lives. And while the books are far from cerebral, there are nuggets of philosophical thought that you can read deeper into. It is a tough feat to write something accessible to all but also pose questions for deeper thinking. What is reality? If we are but a sum of experiences, who are we if we do not remember who we were the day prior?
