Secret Invasion: Runaways Young Avengers

It should come as no surprise that the two Marvel teams with Skrull characters (okay, one is half-Skrull) get their own Secret Invasion one shot story. What is surprising is how little overlap there was between the two. I would have guessed that Marvel would use the Secret Invasion as an excuse to advertise a bit more for both the Runaways and the Young Avengers, but man would I have guessed wrong there.
I’m reading this as part of my read through of all of the Runaways stories. So my focus was heavily on them – I am planning on reading Young Avengers in the near future though (it’s on the list).



This volume is a pretty quick read, being that it is only three issues long (totaling something like 75 pages). There wasn’t a whole lot of build-up to the events occurring – likely because that had already been done during the main Secret Invasion plotline.
Despite Teddy (Young Avenger) appearing to be a very pivotal role for the Secret Invasion (and by that I mean the rulers absolutely need him to be dead so their zealots don’t question them), the attack focused on Teddy and crew isn’t insanely large. Admittedly it’s almost more than both teams can handle together – but it wasn’t. I’m assuming that the Skrull leaders didn’t want too many of them to know about Teddy (thus the “kill any Skrull that sees him” command) so they chose to send out a limited number of specialized agents instead. When you put it like that it makes a bit more sense. I still would have liked to see a larger number of Skrulls, but that’s most because I feel that it would have resulted with more heroes showing up to that specific area (have I mentioned that I can get greedy for crossovers?).
Other noteworthy highlights include Xavin trying harder to get along with the group as a whole (including trying to keep them safe, even if it means them hating her). Her relationship with Karolina gets a chance to develop some more too, which is greatly appreciated.
There is one moment that had me literally laughing out loud, and unsurprisingly it involved Molly. I just think it’s the funniest thing when somebody gets surprised by how strong she is.
There wasn’t much occurring outside the main plot, which I can’t really complain about considering there wasn’t enough time to do much else. While not being the strongest Runaways plot, it was still interesting. Now I just need to make some time and read the main Secret Invasion plot…
