Completely Yours (Opposites Attract)

by Erin Nicholas

Kiera Connolly is a graphic designer for an advertising agency by day and a kick-ass warrior princess in a video game by night. She's a geeky girl who prefers to stay behind the scenes in virtual worlds and relationships. Until she meets hot, heroic EMT Zach Ashley.

Zach is all about in-person, hands-on relationships. As an EMT, he prides himself on his listening skills and bedside manner. After daring to date him, Kiera looks at herself, and the world, differently, finding a new, more confident, and radiant self when she steps out from behind the computer.

Complete opposites find a connection.

What sets you on the path of life? Is it an action, a forceful hand or something you just know inside of you? I have two young boys. My youngest wants to be a rugby league player or a baseball player. I encourage him to try his hardest and work towards his goals but I also remind him that anything can happen and he should keep studying hard. Now, when it comes to my oldest, he wants to be a gamer. This bloody scares me. He’s 13 and I have this horrific image of him at 28 sitting in his room (at my house) and gaming all day and night. To be honest, there is no chance in hell that hubby and I will let that happen. But, I think that’s what you picture when you think about someone gaming. Completely Yours gave me a wee bit of a different picture.

Kiera has what she thought was a perfect life. She’s a graphic designer for a game that she helped a couple of mates develop when they were in College. This game is now extremely popular but is also very time-consuming. It’s not unusual for Kiera to spend days in her pj’s in front of her computer. Her friends Maya and Sophia decide enough is enough and force her to step outside. Kiera is happy to do it and talks her friends into going to Comic Con with her. Dressed in her costume, doing what she loves AND keeping her friends happy, nothing could go wrong…

Zach is a paramedic that’s been called to a ceiling collapse during Comic Con. Up to twenty thousand people were inside and could be trapped. It’s all hands on deck to try and save as many as possible. Walking into the building was a sight to behold for poor Zach. There are creatures and characters of all shapes and sizes. Is the blood fake or real? Did that creature lose a limb? This job just got a lot harder…

Things are crazy and it’s getting harder for Zach to work out who’s hurt and who’s not. A beautiful princess catches his eye and he’s drawn to her. She’s a little dazed and agitated which brings Zach’s protective instincts front and centre. There are a lot of people needing his help but he can’t help but keep this woman close to his side. Lucky for him, he soon learns that the princess speaks the language of these creatures and helps him to assess and manage their treatments.

Kiera is worried for her friends, feeling a little unsteady on her feet and a wee bit overwhelmed. When the lovely medic takes her hand and helps her out, she can’t help but cling to him. Together, they do some good and when it’s time to finish up, there’s a connection that neither can deny. It’s kind of a shame, but also lucky for Kiera that at the end of his shift she blacks out in his arms…

Completely Yours is about a man who has been on a path to helping as many people as he can. You could pretty much say that Zach has a hero complex. His path was set many years ago when he was saved by a brave man and he knows he wants to be just like that. Zach’s family has recently had grief land them low and he’s trying to help his sister Aimee and parents get past their grief. He wants to help them but he feels like he's getting nowhere. His parents don't seem to be improving and the only thing that seems to have Aimee's attention is a computer game…that his princess helped design.

Kiera is coming to realise that by avoiding heartbreak and emotional conflict, she's also avoiding life. Her friends are there for her with no questions asked but she sees now that she could be helping them more. Putting Zach on the temporary shelf could have led her to miss one of the most remarkable things to happen in her life.

Both Zach and Kiera are good for each other. They help each other look outside the bubble they’ve created and see what else is on offer.

I enjoyed Completely Yours but I will admit to finding times that I rolled my eyes. The main characters were just a little too perfect in their imperfections. Turns out that most of their problems were not really problems at all. Zach just needed to mind his own business and Kiera just needed to actually take note of what’s going on around her. I think we can all identify with either of those issues.

To be honest, I think it was the lack of surprise that made this not reach a five-star rating. I could guess easily what was going to happen before it happened.

All good. I enjoyed the teaser for Maya’s story and will definitely be keeping an eye out for it in the future.
