The Walking Dead Volume 1: Days Gone Bye

by Robert Kirkman

  • An epidemic of apocalyptic proportions has swept the globe, causing the dead
to rise and feed on the living. In a matter of months, society has crumbled:
There is no government, no grocery stores, no mail delivery, no cable TV. Rick
Grimes finds himself one of the few survivors in this terrifying future. A
couple months ago he was a small town cop who had never fired a shot and only
ever saw one dead body. Separated from his family, he must now sort through all
the death and confusion to try and find his wife and son. In a world ruled by
the dead, we are forced to finally begin living.

Where to even start? Wow...
I knew of the graphic novels back when the show was first announced, but I fear zombies so I never bothered with either. Needless to say I ended up watching the show and now I'm finally getting around to these. The biggest thing about them is the fact that it is NOT about the zombies, it's about the survivors or more specifically Rick Grimes.
There is a lot of mental things going on and it's no stretch of the imagination to see how a situation like this could really get to a person. It's kind of awesome that it focuses on that aspect more than anything else. I'm also really fond of the fact that it's not going to the same as the show, so I'll be surprised when it comes to both in the future. It's a great set up for those who move from one to the other.
It centers around normal people just trying to survive and doing what they need too to get by. It's eerie seeing Atlanta since I only live a few hours away, and it makes it that much more relatible for me. It's a very strong start for the series and I look forward to reading the rest.
