When I saw the cover of this book I was like OMG this looks hot beyond words. So I requested a copy from the author through the book machine. I was over the moon when my request was acknowledged and I couldn't wait to begin reading.

If I was to rate this book based on its cover I would give it a five star rating, however, there is more to a book than its cover. I was intrigued by the concept of this story which I thought was unique and could not wait to dive between the pages.

By Sea takes you into the world of the military, CIA and the drug cartel. Brody is a marine who was sent on a mission to Guatemala to destroy a warehouse belonging to the cartel. While he was there, an accident happened that led to him being discharged from the military. In addition he was forced to sever all ties with his past that included the members of the team who went with him on the mission. He was forced to relocate to Corpus Christi where he became the captain of a fishing boat. Life is not going too well for him, however, this would change when a stranger made him an offer that he could not refuse.

Rayna Lopez is a CIA operative who is eager to begin working in the field. As such, when her boss gave her an assignment, she was exhilarated. However, her exhilaration was temporary when she found out that the assignment involved monitoring a former marine, to ensure that he was not revealing any government secrets. After their encounter she never expected to cross paths with him again. However, due to sheer coincidence these two will find themselves interacting once again.

The story is interesting, however, I felt that there was a lot missing. Why would the government be conducting experiments on soldiers, giving them supernatural liabilities, hide them away and threaten them with death if they should reveal this secret? I thought this was very strange. What I also found disturbing was that the CIA would hire the daughter of an infamous drug cartel to work for them. Don’t they usually carry out extensive research on persons whom they are hiring? Also, who is Joe Smith and what is his agenda? All these questions and no answers provided.

The story started out slow and it took some while before things started heating up. It was not until about 60% into the book that the pace picked up. It was at this point that I had a hard time putting down the book. To say I was eager to discover what was coming next is an understatement. There are some twists which, when it came I was thinking wow! However, at the same time I was thinking “Why am I not surprised?” This reaction was based on how some of the characters behaved throughout the story.

I enjoyed the story, however, I was not satisfied with the way it was wrapped up as I still had a lot of questions that were not answered. In spite of this I would recommend it to readers who are looking for sweet romantic read with a twist.
