I was thrilled to pick up this short story since I have wanted to read the Boyou Heat series and haven't had the time. I snuck in this quick holiday short story just before Christmas but I was disappointed in how abruptly it ended.

As in any good short story, the characters already knew each other. She was the caretaker for his mother and corresponded with him about things at home.

Now, is story was set in 2005. Who writes letters now a days? Especially since he is a diplomat who must move around a lot. Why not email?

He returns home once he learns that she was about to leave his service. She quits since she is in love with him and he doesn't notice her. He runs back to stop her and after some hot and heavy action, he walks away because she is the mating kind and he "doesn't have it in him" to settle down.

He has a bad case of the I'm no good for you, but I don't want you with anyone else.

He finally realizes that maybe they can work things out and then it is abruptly over.

If I read the series, maybe I could have filled in the blanks better. It was not a good grab to introduce me to the series.
