Lothaire by Kresley Cole

Lothaire (Immortals After Dark, #11)

by Kresley Cole

From the humblest of beginnings a millennia ago, Lothaire the Enemy of Old rose to power, becoming the most feared and evil vampire in the immortal world. Driven by his past, he will not rest until he captures the vampire Horde's crown for himself.
The discovery of his Bride, the female meant only for him, threatens to derail his plot. She is a mere mortal, a glaring vulnerability for a male with so many deadly foes bent on annihilating anything he desires. Yet soon he discovers his Bride's secret. A magnificent power dwells inside the fragile human, one that will aid his quest.
But to possess that power, he will have to destroy her. Will Lothaire succumb to the torments of his past, or seize a future with her. . . ?

If this story had stopped at 80% of my kindle edition, it would have gotten only one star. The beginning was far from good, although I really liked Elizabeth. Lothaire was not acting like an enemy of old, he was acting like an arrogant asshole, still, somehow paired with being incredibly pathetic in many ways.

His 'relationship' with Ellie during most of the story was hideous. He treated her like a slave, and even when he realized that she was his Bride, he continued to be mean to her. The non-consensual sex is what really made me queasy during the first 80% of the story. When a girl says 'no' in really means 'no' even if the man is stronger, and thinks that she really wants him and is only saying no to tease him. It was very hard to continue to read through that, but the last part of the book did make up for it in the end.

When Lothaire finally understood that he had to respect Ellie, he started to act a little differently as well. That's when he became a little less pathetic. Nix was present in the last part of the book as well, and she's just hilarious. Of course, the next book will be about her, and I truly look forward to that. The Valkyrie are strong women who won't let a man treat them like sh!t, so it will probably be easier to deal with.
