The Shamer's Daughter: Book 1 (The Shamer Chronicles, #1)

by Lene Kaaberbol

Dina has inherited her mother's gift: she is a Shamer, able to see a person's most guilty secrets just by gazing in their eyes. But sometimes her gift feels more like a curse. Nobody seems to want a friend who can see their deepest shame.

But when Dina's mother is called to Dunark Castle to uncover the truth about a terrible crime, Dina must come to terms with her power, and quickly - or let her mother fall prey to the vicious dragons of Dunark.

This is almost a Danish Children's Classic. It's been so long sine I read this book that all I can remember is Dina's "eyes of shame."

The setting gives me a medieval feeling, which is part of what I like. It helps simplify the story, because there's no technology to consider. It's all action. And the plot is very actionpacked, it's filled with dragons, supernatural things and how you treat people. It'll also make for a great read aloud-story. It's absolutely beautiful!

The characters are so simple, which goes very well with this simple children's story. The characters end up being your friends along the way.
