West Coast Avengers is easily one of my favorite comic series running right now. It’s so funny and light, while also trying to make some fairly important points. That’s difficult to blend into one series. Throw in a bunch of character interactions (ones we typically don’t get to see anywhere else, mind you) and I’m sold.
What I love about this series is that it is very clear that each of the characters has their own role. Kate is the anchor of the series/team. Without her neither would exist. Clint is the adult, both coaching the team and trying not to be driven crazy by them all. America is the muscle, but she’s also the emotional support for Kate. Johnny’s ability may not be unique, but the fact that he’s new and trying to manipulate his powers in different ways (like the jewelry revealed in last issue) makes him standout. The fact that he can basically be indestructible helps too. Quetin is the physic of the group, but he’s also their assigned pain in the butt teammate. Gwen is the comedic relief, throwing in moments of absurdity and unpredictability. The last two teammates combined have certainly given me some of the biggest laughs.
This issue concludes the BRODOK plot. It was a little silly, but I’m hardly one to complain about that. I’ll be curious to see what their next plot will be. They set up half a dozen (if not more, I didn’t count) antagonists to start making appearances, which was pretty smart. I don’t know much/anything about them, but I imagine we’ll be learning more about them very soon.
